Observatories

Sommers-Bausch Observatory at Colorado University This is where I do a lot of observing, as well as help out with public observing sessions, programming and instrumentation.
Mt. Wilson Observatory Much of our understanding of the Universe came from research done at this facility. Located just outside Pasadena, California, in the San Gabriel Mountains, the Observatory has a heritage of major contributions dating from the beginning of this century, and continues to remain at the forefront of observational astronomy and astrophysics. Meteorological conditions above the Los Angeles Basin provide the best circumstances for astronomical observations on the North American continent.
National Optical Astronomical Observatory is a national center for optical astronomy in the United States.
GNAT - Global Network of Astronomical Telescopes. A non-profit organization dedicated to being a catalyst and information source for all those interested in research and education using relatively small astronomical telescopes.
WWW Virtual Library listing of observatories (of every variety) both on, above, and even beneath the Earth.

Organizations

Longmont Astronomical Society An organization of local amateur astronomers in Longmont, Colorado
SEDS Students for the Exploration of Space
Astronomical League (AL) An organization of local amateur astronomical societies from all across the United States, intended to encourage an interest in astronomy through educational and observational programs for the amateur astronomer.
Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers (ALPO). An international organization of amateur and professional planetary astronomers with a separate observing group for each solar system object.
Association of Amateur Variable Star Observers (AAVSO). Coordinates, evaluates, compiles, and publishes variable star observations made primarily by amateur astronomers, and make them available to researchers and educators.
International Occultation Timing Association (IOTA) provides predictions for grazing occultations of stars by the Moon and predictions for occultations of stars by asteroids and planets, plus information on observing methods and equipment.
American Meteor Society. Information on meteors and meteor showers. If you live in North America, this is the place where you can file a fireball report.
IMO - the International Meteor Organization. A younger but more global group, with lots of "how-to" information about different methods for observing meteors.
Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP). A venerable organization of both professional and amateur astronomers. Publishes "Mercury" magazine.
Amateur Telescope Making (ATM) - for people who like to build their own.
International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) A nonprofit organization for those who would like to combat the increase in light pollution.
The Planetary Society Encourages the exploration of our solar system and the search for extraterrestrial life.
American Astronomical Society (AAS) - The major organization of professional astronomers for North America.
International Astronomical Union (IAU). An organization of professional astronomers involved with internationalcollaboration and policymaking. For example, the IAU is the sole authority for assigning designations and names to celestial bodies and the surface features thereon.
North American Meteor Network (NAMN) -- dedicated to coverage of sporadic and meteor shower activity.
